Haikus From Hell

On successive nights
the fires from far away
as if the rocks were burning

Shrapnel in their stomachs

Brandishing a handful of dirt
black smoke drifts away
following the morning

Muezzin calls to prayer

Bright yellow food packets
offering non-exploding care
cluster coloured air-drops

Resembling death

Genetic microbial prints
the ever-expanding genome
from which to pick and choose

Inhumanitarian Manifestations

Approaching winter's long inertia
waging God against technology
surrounded by dead birds

Small fragments of nothing
Regrettable fodder without eyes
without brains in vengeance name

Congregations of the dead
preparing their final stand
these hands to bloodied hands

While not far away
unrelenting legend lies in Qurna
home to the Garden of Eden
