FINAL ALLEN
San Francisco 1996

Allen Ginsberg is performing here at the de Young Museum where the Whitney Museum's Beat Culture exhibit is being shown. Allen was very tense before his amazing performance. He was very particular about the sound quality and other details. I was able to follow Ginsberg around to the different venues for the Beat exhibit because my prints were in the show. The genial Ginsberg became progressively short tempered as time went on. He knew that he did not have much time left. Allen's performance was great.

LARRY KEENAN AND TED JOANS
San Francisco 1996

I am a fan of Ted Joan's work. I was telling him how much I liked his small, powerful, painting that was in the Whitney Museum's Beat Culture exhibit at the de Young Museum.

LARRY KEENAN AT THE SMITHSONIAN
Washington, DC 1996

The Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery exhibited REBELS: Beat Artists and Poets of the 1950's. I was asked to come to the opening in Washington, DC by the curator Steven Watson. I told him that money was tight and my wife Lisa and I were not planning to attend. I had only one photograph in the exhibit, a mural of Last Gathering at City Lights. He insisted and said "I had to come, there was a special surprise for me." After much discussion with Stephen, Lisa and I went to the opening. As we arrived, we saw my photograph on the front of the Smithsonian as the icon image of the show. I was totally blown away.
