Anita Savary
Anita lives in a seventh-floor walk-up of Paris's St. Denis section, a view of the Eiffel Tower from one window and Basilica of the Sacred Heart from another. She began making collages in the early 80's when she began cutting headlines from newspapers, juxtaposing them with photos of politicians and images from magazine advertisements. She has developed her own technique of cut, paste, and varnish by trial and error over a number of years and eventually began constructing her own frames, which are now an integral part of her collages. Anita is also a gifted photographer. She eventually began to integrate images from her own photographs into her art.
In November of 1989, Anita heard about the destruction of the Berlin Wall and immediately packed her bags and rushed over to take photos. While in Thailand she had heard about the wall's incredible graffiti, and she wanted to get there before it was all gone. The result was the Berlin Wall Project, in which she integrates her documentary photographs of the wall's destruction with the graffiti--over 100 collages. Anita's themes range from overtly political to spiritual psychedelic. Her work "365 Days to Scream" is a world map converted into a bas relief covered with minute images of the people and problems particular to each corner of the globe. She created this collage, which measures approximately 1 X 3 meters, simultaneously with an equally large collage based on a Tibetan Mandala. She felt that if she were to create such a huge picture of decay and dissolution, she must counterbalance it with one equally powerful in healing and integration.
Anita Savary is a sorceress of the spirit, who does not merely invoke, but conjures in accordance with her own vision. She is not representing reality, she is creating it.
