Katie Oliver and Rachel Sands

Katie and Rachel are sisters and got together in southern California one day in January when it was still cold in much of the world, and made some sand art of a mermaid and merman.

The following photos document the very fleeting time in history when these sand creations, which took hours to make and which tied humans and nature at an essential level
of art and inspiration, were around. Tide and wind eventually blew away the sculptures. The Oceanside beach was bereft of the art the day after these mermaids existed.
